Time Magazine Advertising Costs

What if Obama were to nationalize pharmaceutical companies?
Along with his endeavors to nationalize the finance, health, and auto industries, I think he would do well to work on drug companies.
The industry claims prices are so high because of research costs. But any of you who have ever worked in a hospital or doctor’s office or clinic know what waste the drug companies expend on freebies, including lunches and dinners out for whole departments.
It all comes under advertising. If the pharmaceutical companies did not spend so much on advertising– tv, magazines, radio, billboards, promo items, etc.– drug costs would come down significantly.
Do they even need to advertise? The only people who need to be kept up to date on new meds are doctors. Anyone can search online for interactions and applications and counterindications.
TV and magazine ads just create more hypochondriacs daily. Exactly what the drug companies want.
Look around your doctor’s office next time and see all the free gizmos you pay for.
I freelance for a satellite transmission company & on occasion we get calls to provide uplink or downlink services to a few of the major phamaceutical companies, & I have first hand experience in seeing OBSCENE amounts of waste & excess…Example, these events are typically held at one of New York’s 4 star hotels & it is not uncommon for the client (Phamaceutical company xyz) to “roll out the red carpet” with top shelf liquor, lobster, shrimp, Chateau Briand, etc. for doctors and or other medical professionals, who are invited to watch round table discussions about clinical trials for new products, with the end goal being that once they get back to their offices, they will prescribe said new medications to their patients. Now, I understand and agree that this type of information is important so that the doctors in attendance know what kinds of new treatments are available, but what I object to is this ridiculous excess as provided by the pharmaceutical companies. A major part of these costs in turn, get passed on to us the consumers. I also take offense to the arguments I hear in opposition to the Obama health care reform legislation by people who have company supported/subsidized insurance. The rest of us who either pay for insurance out of pocket or do without, really need someone to step up and offer us some assistance. One of the things that President Obama has emphasized is that anyone who is currently getting medical insurance through their employer could very well lose it at a moment’s notice, either by way of being laid off or if an employer decides that it is costing too much to continue paying for. So, all I can say is WAKE UP EVERYBODY, WE ALL NEED TO STAND BEHIND OUR PRESIDENT ON THIS ONE, AS THIS IS SOMETHING THAT CONCERNS US ALL! JUST MY .02! (Hi Betsy!)
