FIVE FAMOUS AMERICANS BORN ON FEBRUARY 11TH
THOMAS ALVA EDISON was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847. He was an inventor, scientist and a businessman. Many of the devices he invented have greatly influenced our lives; the phonograph, motion picture camera, and the light bulb. Edison was also a business man which helped him be able to apply principles of mass production and teamwork to the process of invention, and is credited with the “creation of the first industrial research laboratory.” He’s one of the most prolific inventers; he holds 1,083 U.S. patents in his name and also patents in the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Many of his inventions contributed to mass communication – particularly telecommunications. The invention that really made him famous was the phonograph in 1877. Apparently this invention was so unexpected that folks remarked that it “appeared like magic”. That’s where he became known as “The Wizard of Menlo Park.” (d. 1931)
MAXIMILIAN ADELBERT BAER was born in 1909 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was an American boxer during the 1930s, and one-time Heavyweight Champion of the World. Baer also was an actor, entertainer, professional wrestler and referee. Ring Magazine lists him #22 in their list of greatest punchers of all time. (d. 1959)
BURTON LEON REYNOLDS, JR was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1936. Mr. Reynolds is an actor who had roles in films such as Deliverance, White Lightning, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, and Cannonball Run. He attended Florida State University on a college football scholarship where he was an all-star halfback. However, he tore a cartilage in the first game, and during Christmas break that same year he was in a car accident that effectively ended his football playing career. He went on to attend Palm Beach Junior College where he was involved in play productions and won the 1956 Florida State Drama Award. This award included a scholarship to Hyde Park Playhouse, a summer stock theater in New York. He went on tour, performing in Tea and Sympathy. Upon his return he enrolled in acting classes. He made his Broadway debut in Look, We’ve Come Through. Riverboat (1960-1961) was his entrance into television. He also appeared in The Blue Angels and Brothers Brannagan. He went on to appear in a number of other shows. His big screen debut was Angel Baby in 1961. Reynolds got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978.
JOHN ELLIS “JEB” BUSH was born in Midland, Texas in 1953. His alma mater is the University of Texas at Austin. He is a politician who was the 43rd governor of Florida (1999-2007) He is a member of the prominent Bush family – the younger brother of former President George W. Bush, and the second son of former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush.
JENNIFER JOANNA ANISTON was born in 1969, in Sherman Oaks, California. She is an actress, producer and director. Her acting career began with the role as Rachel Green in the television series, Friends (1994-2004). For this role she won an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She has also starred in such films as Bruce Almighty, Office Space, Rumor Has It, Along Came Polly, and The Break-Up. Aniston is involved in several charities – Friends of El Faro, a non-profit that helps raise money for an orphanage in Mexico. She has done TV commercials for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the “It Can’t Wait” campaign to free Burma, and has made contributions to increase understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
