How can I make a magazine layout?

I have to make a fake magazine for a class. How can I go about doing this? I do NOT have Microsoft Publisher. If I did, I wouldn’t be asking this question.

What I’m looking for is either:
- A guide to making a magazine (not a Magazine cover!) using Photoshop or Word.
- A FREE software for Macs to make a magazine/newsletter

Anything else you think would help is welcome as well!
