Magazine Publishing Careers

Publishing career, need more info?
I want to go into publishing, as in for magazines and design but I need a little bit more info about it like
What’s the pay like?
Is this career high in demand?
..just more info, please! If you know anything…
The magazine industry is a very tough one. It is very fashion-bound (which means it changes often) and is financed almost entirely by advertising. It is known as a fickle industry because its workers are highly mobile.
You need to know a lot about the industry to succeed in it, and the more you get to know about it, the more you realise you don’t want to be there!
The industry covers a lot of different aspects – writing, photography, graphics, typesetting, editing, copyediting, subbing, advertising, sales, recruiting, and more. You have to find out what your own talents are and choose one or two of the above aspects.
The pay is not different from any other industry, depending on the level you reach. Sales people make more than cadets, for example, and recruiters make less than editors-in-chief.
Yes, there is always demand for people in publishing because it is a high turnover industry. But magazines are born and die every day, and the game is full of cowboys. Watch out.
See a career counsellor, read up about it, and good luck.
