Independent Project: Design Magazine
Hello, I'm in the process for obtaining an independent project in a design magazine, probably 100-120 hours. Because this is my first independent project review, I wondered if anyone can give me some tips on what to be aware of the process, what I put in my contract to protect my rights. From my previous work experience, which can go forward and backward several times only to approve a development plan. So would be a better method here?
My contract includes a maximum number of repetitions (usually) at each step aproval. Usually three stages. Thumbnail sketch of design, the phase composition of colors that is almost close to final form, and once more before going to print. In each of these steps, no I think no more adjustment in the design approved by the previous step. If the customer simply changes their mind, the contract be renegotiated. I have no fear of eating the cost of the MA errors but I'm not going to redo unlimited, simply because the client can not decide. But it should be clear that the next step does not begin until approval is signed in the hand during the previous step. In addition, be careful to manage their copyrights. If the magazines' layout theme (called "network" in the industry) the idea is original, copyright is basically yours, unless you sold it, outright. If you do not sell, you must pay more than if you can keep the copyright. If you sell, you have no nothing more to say about how design is used. If you hold the copyright, any new use of the provision, beyond what is contracted, should be renegotiated for you. In other words, your contract may provide that the network is yours and limit the use of "one year" or "two years" or "five years" or whatever. If you want to keep using, you should come to you. It also means they can not make minor changes in design without reach you. For example, you can design the distribution of important features such as the logo, cover design, font family, pull out the features include the page number and table content.
