QUESTION: How I can be an Indian director of photography?

For people whose successful career in this case, the question most often heard is that asks how you got where you are. In fact, as soon as I started to develop this website and the status of my willingness to share this information and answer questions about production, I started getting questions about what I call "The Great question. "

So I wrote this generic response. I hope it's useful for anyone considering a career or behind the camera.

If you ask 10 or even 100 different people of how they came to this business, you get 100 different answers. As for me, I had a natural interest throughout the image, partly because of my Guru, whose hobby is photography in black and white. Learning and training under him gave me a lot of exposure to this type of Photography is a hobby has quickly flourished to a passion. At this particular point in time, I have also participated in plays for companies Lucknow small theater, and functions out of character and I also worked as a carpenter between racks / operator of the light / Construction Set in these works. All interconnected, if perfectly.

The experience and training I have gained in my teen years paid full-back I decided to enter in a full-time job. I started working as a man of light in a television station, my experiences between racks of carpentry, building game enhance and strengthen my skills. I started Picasa, but with time my vision and dream have increased and I saw myself the possibility of a career cameraman in television or film industry to make this dream a Actually, I went to acting school full time and I majored in theater (Step CRAFT) and lighting design phase of production. Believe me complete my education was the best I could do. In a more extensive training in many different phases of the business that allowed me to focus and refine my natural abilities (which are very visual) point I was sure he wanted to be a filmmaker.

In some Thus, because of my previous work experience at a television station which allowed me to do the lighting, cameras, and building sets, etc, I was very ahead of many of my colleagues when I started drama school. Still, I went hunting for part-time job, projects, anything to let me work with cameras, lighting, etc. before finishing a few summers, I worked as a temporary technical television station and right after graduation, I was offered full-time apprentice Binod Pradhan's position behind the camera work in Mumbai. While making this work, I continued to make short films hand, volunteering to take the VHS format, direct and edit anything to the whole world for what you would pay for the equipment, etc. Shortly after the films after Having worked for a period of eight years, while working undercover at different levels of cinematography is, as a Spark, mango, key grip, charger, discussion extractor, camera operator, lighting and through constant lobbying and show my work, I was offered a position at a camera from a television producer house.Â

Therefore, after several years of effort and companies with multiple listings long-term industrial, documentary and series under my belt, my work was observed by a highly efficient producer of independent films Red / offers advertising /. I made an offer he could not refuse, that is, to spend years of running many shows produced for the network. This stroke of luck put me on the map of the DOP and my career has gone well in life since.Â

Encourage the desire become a Declaration of Principles is a bit like saying that he wants to become a movie star. There are no roads to these objectives. Many try but few succeed. But foundations of art is learned, well learned in film school. Therefore, snack privileges People who are awarded on a film school choice (as born a cameraman big Hollywood director and producer) is probably the best place to start. Also expose you to more information on many other aspects of the business.Â

What you need to know

There are obvious things one should consider becoming an example DOP, photography, including composition, lighting movement, fine arts and, in general, including the music, painting, even sculpture. PDO also helps if one has a good hand-eye coordination and is good with hands with tools. After all, a camera is just a big complex, sensitive tool, with many interdependent elements that must be mastered by the dictatorship of the proletariat. It is also important for a Declaration of Principles to be a good leader, a good communicator and have good people management skills. But the most important things you should know PDO is often neglected. The study of the theory of "montage" or editing. Assembly theory is at the heart of making "movies" of work, either on television or the big screen. Also includes and requires study and understanding of the psychology of human perception – the things that happen between "see" and subjective perception. Â

Some of the most important dynamic image movement we see on television or in a theater is the dynamic of the "cut" a scene or shot or one party against another, then another, then another, etc. The process dialectical union of two things to create a third, then join with another and so on without end, that is the basic grammar of cinema as we know it and it works at many levels. He works at the juxtaposition of scenes, shots within a scene and elements of sound and image and movement. What direction the composition, lighting and physical movement that brings the viewer's eyes and the effect is the juxtaposition of these elements with the emotions and perceptions of the viewers? Address wide, flat half, Close-up screen, These increases are also the language of film as a subject and verb in the spoken language. These concepts are fundamental, as well as language Moving visual images and should be well understood by all those who want to be a Cameraman.Â

Being a director of photography …

Q: Could you define the filmmakers work? How are lighting and electric service?

To: Director Photography / Photograph (if one person) is as a cinematographer. All related technical services department (camera, lighting, electrical and mango) work is considered work of the RFP. Thirty-four (1 / 34) is a PD. He has years of professional experience to gain accreditation and WICA ICS.
Ask yourself this question … Â

Thus, the conclusion is that there is no way actual set to become a filmmaker. Ask yourself this question – "What about your life? What are your hopes and dreams, and find a route best suits your needs. Want to work in industry, teaching professionals, and start shooting? Â

… Be ready for the big pay cut

A large number of assistants working chamber for a minimum of five to seven years and then start shooting. Wizards Camera make more money in the department with techie. Money can be evil, sometimes, in the sense that they lose sight of your goals because it offers so much to him. From years pass and suddenly everything you've done is make money.

Be ready for the big drop because the land pay a concert 3500/day $ 2,000 – commercial its first year, much less the top three. Some people start shooting before emerging from film school and five years later, could be a professional RFP (In my opinion, a professional is someone who lives with his profession).

You will need a light meter incident (I recommend the Sekonic L398 for beginners) and a spot meter (F or M Minolta). As a practical, working knowledge of multiple cameras, which means understanding the depth of field, the circle of confusion operating a camera and learn the characteristics and understanding of the lighting means a better understanding of the color temperature, gels, emissions, etc etc rebounds. Â
Advice for volunteers …

Volunteers of the session for three reasons:

1. Gain experience or upgrade.

2. To establish contacts.

3. as a favor to someone with whom they work a lot.

Volunteering is a very difficult property because nobody can really afford to work for free for eighteen weeks. My teams are loyal to me because I gave them a chance when nobody else would. One my nice camera assistants letter of FTII He was one of the lucky few who have been accepted this year for the course of filmmaking. When a member crew can not work with you because they should win the money they have to respect that

Key personnel should have experience no doubt. Anyone you can volunteer. He worked in many volunteers in the shooting has made me to transition from corporate videos movies. The keys were still alive and have always been generally is paid (usually smaller scale). You can make the short film format, but not a function.

The film is not just an art. It is also a business.Â

The executive producers tend not to invest in people without experience as a director or producer. I've seen ads where people say it could make a function $ 100,000.00 that can be done if you are a veteran industry could get a lot of people and have offers of favors from people in the industry of others. For each one of them there are hundreds of which the film does not happen for a reason or another. We humbly beg you, NOT the man approach the money until you have done your job as a producer and everything is in place.

Find a pearl script is the character of the engine, simple and very few places. Actors – who have not won have problems. Finding an actor who has done much work but it is a short list of Bollywood and to give a party can not refuse. If you can name the film so that people will interested and able to give money.

… Filmmaker heart

I am one of the few people who actually worked in three departments. Most people work in a department. But I think that is what makes me a shot. It has also attracted many directors owe me because I can do all three ministries. I was a technician for rent, but I am a filmmaker at heart. My knowledge of theater and film has helped me tremendously working with directors and understanding where they come from.Â

The statement ………………

last tip: If you really want to succeed as a PDO (or anything else in life) – be tenacious! Never give up! But be prepared for a long time, frustration and even years to find the way and climb the ladder. Since there is no way to become a director or a director or how an actor is often difficult and can be very frustrating. But if you look at the careers of those who succeed in this business, you see three things they have in common: tenacity, perseverance and tenacity! Of course, talent is important, but that's just a lot of hard work and the desire and respect. Becoming a doctor, lawyer or engineer is easy in comparison, because the road is clear. If you come to work, to get the title. It is very small and dry. Make your own way in this case is much more difficult and this is really what separates the wheat from the chaff. Â
And do not forget the fate and destiny. You will need lots of it. Not the kind you need when you are given but the type that exists "where opportunity and preparation meet"! This lucky guy that can make for yourself. Become a preparation that is willing to take the opportunity when it occurs. And thanks to careful preparation also will present many opportunities and ways of seeing to create your own.Â

Remember – Visions are worth pursuing.

That the mind can conceive, if you think you can get.

About the Author

Born in Los Angeles, David Henry Hwang is the son of immigrant Chinese American parents; his father worked as a banker, and his mother was a professor of piano. Educated at Stanford University, from which he earned his B.A. in English in 1979, he became interested in theatre after attending plays at the American Conservatory in San Francisco. His marginal interest in a law career quickly gave way to his involvement in the engaging world of live theatre. By his senior year, he had written and produced his first play, FOB (an acronym for “fresh off the boat”), which marked the beginning of a meteoric rise as a playwright. After a brief stint as a writing teacher at a Menlo Park high school, Hwang attended the Yale University School of Drama from 1980 to 1981. Although he didn’t stay to complete a degree, he studied theatre history before leaving for New York City, where he thought the professional theatre would provide a richer education than the student workshops at Yale.
